Citizens for Responsible Mining
We want to introduce you to our group called “Citizens for Responsible Mining”. The formation of this group is in response to a growing public sentiment against mining. It is our opinion that this sentiment is a result of misinformation propagated by anti-mining groups, whose focus is on the single issue of preventing mining. Our concern is that mining, which is so important to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is getting a bad name and could soon be needlessly prevented from continuing.
We take the position that we are to be good stewards of our resources. This means mining our resources in a responsible way that protects the environment and provides needed raw materials for our fellow man along with the high paying jobs needed to keep our communities healthy. We should be proud of our mining heritage and should proudly encourage responsible mining to continue in the U.P.
We will no longer sit back and watch some small anti-mining groups, who do not share our values, prevent mining from continuing in the U.P. Once again a minority of people who are outspoken about their cause will have their way unless we are heard. We want to provide a voice for those who share our values. We want to educate the public on what the issues are. We want to provide information on the advancements in technology and regulations making it possible for mining, even sulfide mining, to take place without harming the environment. We also want the local mining companies to know we expect them to use the best available mining technology and practices, follow the regulations, and mine responsibly. We do not need to choose between mining and the environment when both are possible. We will strive to be the voice of reason that can sort through the distortions and mistruths, wherever they occur, for the benefit of the people in our area.
In order to be influential when dealing with the parties concerned, we need to have a large base of members who believe in these principles. Our membership is free and we encourage you to join our ranks. This is a way to be a part of the effort to encourage responsible mining development and protection the environment all at the same time. We can have good paying jobs and a healthy environment. Help us to achieve both!
